Baby’s First Cereal

It’s so easy to make a flavourful, healthy first cereal for baby at home. All you need is a quality, high-speed food processor or blender. This cereal combines three nutritious grains and is easy for your baby to digest. Brown rice crumbs are available in health or organic food stores — or you can grind up rice cakes, but only use those that list the ingredients as 100 per cent rice.

Nuts are optional in this recipe. You can add nuts to the dry ingredients when processing the cereal in the blender, or make up your cereal without nuts and serve the prepared cereal with 1⁄4 teaspoon of a smooth, unsalted nut butter.

Method 3

Start cooking
Step 1

Add the , , and the coarsely chopped , if using, to a blender and process until fine and smooth with no lumps or coarse pieces. Pass your ground dry cereal through a sieve to ensure the mixture is as smooth as possible.

Step 2

Put the , breast milk or formula into a small bowl and sprinkle over 1 tablespoon of the cereal. Whisk with a fork for 30 seconds to prevent any lumps from forming, then allow to rest for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cereal should be smooth and creamy.

Step 3

Serve with a little and add 1/4 teaspoon nut butter for a richer flavour, if desired. Always check the temperature before serving.
